Autonomous System Provider Authorizations (ASPAs) are a new Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI) object that helps network operators validate BGP AS paths and identify route leaks through authorized provider-customer relationships.
In July, APNIC deployed support for ASPA objects in MyAPNIC and the APNIC Registry API. APNIC Members can now publish their upstream provider relationships directly through APNIC’s services.

Why ASPAs matter
RPKI and ROV have significantly improved confidence in route origins, helping operators confirm whether an AS is authorized to announce a particular IP prefix.
However, ROV does not verify the path that routing information takes across the Internet.
ASPAs help fill this gap by allowing ASes to publish their authorized provider relationships. Operators can use this information to validate AS paths, identify route leaks, detect routing anomalies, and improve confidence in routing information received from other networks.
As deployment and adoption increase, ASPAs are becoming an important addition to routing security deployments and operational best practice.
