The APNIC Member Meeting (AMM) at APNIC 62 brought Members and the community together to review APNIC’s performance and discuss priorities for the future.
Three key themes emerged from the discussions:
- APNIC is making progress towards a balanced budget.
- Work to strengthen APNIC and the global Internet Number Registry system continues through community-led processes.
- The 2026 APNIC Survey has provided valuable insights that will help shape APNIC’s future strategic direction.
On behalf of the APNIC Executive Council (EC), I thank everyone who participated in APNIC 62 and the AMM, both in person and online.
APNIC 62 brought together 584 participants from 54 economies. More than 50 community members contributed through open mic sessions, while the EC met with Members, community representatives, and regional partners throughout the conference.
Your feedback and perspectives are important. They will help inform the development of APNIC’s 2028-2032 Strategic Plan, which begins next year.
Financial sustainability
Financial sustainability remains a key focus for the EC.
At the AMM, Members heard that APNIC’s first-half activities were delivered in line with the 2026 Activity Plan and financial performance remains on track. APNIC is operating within budget and currently forecasts a full-year operating deficit of AUD 209,000, an improvement on the budgeted deficit of AUD 308,000.
Looking ahead, APNIC remains on track to return to a balanced budget in 2027.
Discussions also focused on maintaining financial sustainability beyond 2027 as membership growth slows. This will require continued discipline in prioritizing activities, including reducing or discontinuing work that no longer aligns with Members’ needs, while continuing to improve operational efficiency.
Members also received updates on APNIC’s investment portfolio, the sale of the 6 Cordelia Street office, and the organization’s financial reserve strategy. These topics generated significant interest during the open mic session, and we appreciate the constructive feedback shared by participants.
Further information is available in the Executive Council report, Treasurer’s report, and session recording, available online.
Enhancing governance through community participation
Community participation remains central to APNIC’s multistakeholder model and the ongoing development of both APNIC and the global Internet Number Registry system.
We thank community leaders Maemura Akinori, Nicole Chan, Dr Devesh Tyagi, Di Ma, and Gaurav Kansal for their contributions to the ICP-2 Review and RIR Governance Document processes.
The APNIC Open Policy Meeting discussed seven policy proposals, the highest number seen in recent years, with two proposals reaching consensus.
Another important discussion focused on developing the next generation of community leaders. The Community Consultation on Increasing Diversity in Community Leadership highlighted both challenges and opportunities, including strengthening Members’ sense of connection to the APNIC community and supporting emerging leaders through ongoing development pathways.
Participants also highlighted the value of the APNIC Fellowship Program, particularly its role in supporting future leaders from developing economies.
The Secretariat is consolidating the consultation findings for the EC’s consideration as we determine the next steps.
APNIC’s future strategic direction
APNIC 62 also marked the release of the 2026 APNIC Survey findings.
Commissioned by the EC and conducted by an independent research organization, the survey gathered feedback from more than 1,300 Members and community participants. The results provide a statistically robust view of community perceptions of APNIC’s performance, future needs, and priorities.
The findings show consistently high levels of satisfaction across trust, service quality, value of membership, and overall organizational performance.
An important insight was the breadth of priorities identified by respondents. Rather than concentrating on one or two areas, participants highlighted the importance of activities across the organization that support registry operations and contribute to an open, stable, and secure Internet in the Asia Pacific region.
The EC will publish a formal response later this year outlining how these findings will inform APNIC’s next Strategic Plan.
Stay involved
Thank you again to everyone who contributed to APNIC 62 and the AMM.
We encourage Members to continue participating in consultations, policy discussions, governance activities, and through the APNIC EC Contact Form. Ongoing community input helps ensure the EC understands Members’ priorities and supports informed decision-making for APNIC’s future.
