Alan Barrett delivers the AFRINIC report during the APNIC Global Reports session at APRICOT 2016.

We are deeply saddened to share that Alan Barrett, who served on the ICANN Board of Directors, passed away in Cape Town on 28 May 2026.

Alan’s contribution to the development of the Internet, particularly across Africa, was both foundational and far‑reaching. In the early 1990s, he helped bring the first Internet connections to universities in South Africa, supporting the country’s initial steps into the online world. In 1993, he also co‑founded South Africa’s first commercial Internet service provider. He later created the co.za domain, helping establish South Africa’s digital identity at a formative stage.

Alan was deeply involved in building Africa’s Internet infrastructure and governance systems. In 1997, he co‑authored the proposal to establish the African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC) and served on the steering committee that guided its formation. He served on the AFRINIC Board from 2004 to 2009 and on the Number Resource Organisation Number Council from 2004 to 2014. In 2015, he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of AFRINIC, a role he held until 2019, strengthening the organisation’s role and Africa’s voice in global Internet coordination.

His contributions extended globally, including his involvement in the IANA stewardship transition. As a member of the ICANN Board representing the Address Supporting Organisation, Alan was known for his thoughtful approach, careful listening, and clear, principled decision‑making. Colleagues remember him as calm, knowledgeable, and patient, with a strong sense of purpose — a leader who consistently helped move the community forward.

Beyond his formal roles, Alan was a respected and generous member of the Internet community. A regular presence at APRICOT and APNIC meetings, he shared his expertise widely and supported colleagues with openness and care.

Alan’s passing is a significant loss. His work helped shape critical Internet infrastructure, and just as importantly, he strengthened the collaborative community behind it.

We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues around the world. Alan Barrett’s contributions will endure, and he will be remembered with deep respect.

Rest in peace.
