Launching the APNIC Academy IPv6 Certification (Associate) program in the Philippines.

APNIC Academy had a productive year in 2024, marked by further developments in training content, platform enhancements, and increased community engagement.

Instructor-led training remained a key focus, with 169 workshops and tutorials delivered to over 4,750 participants. While instructor-led training includes in-person, online and hybrid, APNIC Academy’s online courses offered greater learning opportunities for a wider audience across the Asia Pacific, with 92 online tutorials and labs delivered.

Our team of Retained Community Trainers (RCTs) were actively engaged in our instructor-led training last year, delivering 100 training events, of which RCTs conducted 77 as lead trainer. Further to this, our Voluntary Community Trainers (VCTs) supported 55 training events (29 online/hybrid and 26 face-to-face). The Community Trainer program has proven successful in providing and scaling localized training on operational issues while mentoring fellow Internet engineers based on real-world experiences within their communities.

Another significant achievement of APNIC Academy training last year was being selected by TEIN*CC to deliver technical training as part of their Asi@Connect program. This collaboration enabled us to deliver 10 in-person training events in 10 economies over six months.

Technical community engagement

In 2024, APNIC Academy demonstrated its ongoing commitment to the technical community by supporting 44 technical community events, including 31 Network Operator Groups (NOGs). Beyond training support, APNIC Academy staff were active members of program committees and presented papers at community events. We were also pleased to support the revival of TWNOG and helped launch the inaugural TLNOG event in August 2024.

APNIC Academy’s security community engagement also remained strong in 2024. APNIC supported and participated in 24 security community events, including participating on the APCERT Steering Committee

Furthermore, in March 2024, APNIC Academy team members had the opportunity to participate and provide local logistics support when APNIC was the local host of IETF 119 in Brisbane.

Curriculum development

In APNIC Academy’s continued commitment to maintain and develop curriculum, we were pleased to present a brand-new course — Network Automation, which launched during APRICOT 2024 / APNIC 57 and was delivered another three times in 2024.

Another major achievement was successfully launching the APNIC Academy IPv6 Certification (Associate) in Nepal and the Philippines. The ‘ALPHA Trial’ certification was well received and resulted in 62 out of 75 participants achieving certification. Building on this success, four BETA Trials for this certification will be delivered in 2025, beginning with Bangladesh and Thailand.

Virtual Labs

Alongside new instructor-led content, existing content was further refined. BGP content was developed to reflect best practice and advancements, and IPv6 content was expanded and improved. To complement theoretical learning, APNIC Academy updated and developed 10 Virtual Labs, providing valuable hands-on exercises. Key improvements to Virtual Labs included prelaunch instructions, confirmation steps to prevent accidental launches, deployment of multiple lab instruction sets, shared lab environments for collaborative learning, and better resource management. The self-paced courses and Virtual Labs saw significant engagement, with participants completing 43,625 hours of learning and a 98% satisfaction rating of course content.

A new look APNIC Academy platform is also well underway, with work in progress milestones achieved in 2024. The modernized platform will offer improved learning experiences for all users.

2025 and beyond

APNIC will continue to refine and improve its training to meet the diverse needs of the Asia Pacific region. A major focus is delivering up-to-date training content with a standardized, modular design to support blended learning. We’re also committed to advancing the APNIC Academy IPv6 Certification (Associate) and providing intermediate to advanced instructor-led training.
