Several new features have just been released on Orbit, designed to enhance the overall experience. As you know, Orbit is an evolution of the APNIC mailing lists — a place where the APNIC community connects, discusses, and shares information related to Internet addressing and networking. Facilitated by APNIC on behalf of the community, Orbit continues to evolve to meet community needs.

Post reporting and moderation

One of the key updates is the introduction of a straightforward process for reporting posts that violate APNIC guidelines or contain harmful content. This feature empowers every community member to contribute to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all users.

For community members

You can now easily flag and report posts that you believe breach the Orbit-mailing list code of conduct.

For list owners and moderators

When a post is reported, instant notifications allow for prompt review and action on potentially inappropriate content.

Streamlined moderation dashboard

A user-friendly dashboard for managing and resolving reported posts has also been added. This enables moderators to take actions such as deleting posts, warning posters, or escalating serious violations efficiently.

This tool functions similarly to platforms like Facebook and Reddit. If a comment is removed due to a breach of guidelines, users will see a notification stating that: “This content has been reported and removed.” This transparency helps users understand when content has been moderated.

Additional updates for enhanced user experience

In addition to the reporting feature, we’ve implemented a few other updates to improve the Orbit experience:

  • List email address: On each list’s landing page, the email address of the list is now prominently displayed. This makes it easier to copy and paste the address when you need to email the list directly.
  • Subscriber count: There is now a text box showing the number of subscribers in each list. This provides better insight into the size of the community users are engaging with.

These enhancements aim to make Orbit more user-friendly and transparent, fostering a stronger sense of community among users.
