When you see APNIC Academy training participants, mostly lead network engineers, sharing their experiences and learning from each other, you know that the train-the-trainer session is working as intended.
From 24 to 26 June 2025, the Indonesia Network Information Centre (IDNIC), the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) and APNIC partnered to offer IPv6 Deployment training in Jakarta, Indonesia. This session was a bit different from other IPv6-related training, in that it included a ‘train-the-trainer’ element. Train-the-trainer focuses on building a network of capable trainers who can spread technical knowledge within their own communities.
So, what were the intended outcomes, and how well did the session deliver?
In this blog post, you’ll learn more about train-the-trainer and opportunities to develop your own skills as an educator by participating in a future session.
Practicing skills, building confidence

IPv6 Deployment brought together over 20 Internet operations professionals to get a better understanding of the IPv6 protocol and how to deploy it in their network. The addition of a train-the-trainer session catered to community champions planning to conduct capacity-building efforts in their own local community.
The intended outcome from train-the-trainer is to increase participants’ confidence in their own ability to share with their professional networks what they’ve learned.
In addition to developing their IPv6 skills and knowledge, participants spent half a day presenting the workshop material to one another, giving and receiving feedback, and setting up the labs that accompany the content.
A strategic step for the technical community
Community Trainer, Affan Basalamah, who supported the event said that the extra interaction afforded by the train-the-trainer segments allowed the experience to be more customized and relevant to the participants’ needs.
According to the APJII Executive Board, which provided support and direction at the session, this was a strategic step in strengthening the role of the Indonesian technical community in building a reliable and sustainable Internet ecosystem.
The APNIC Academy training was an effective collaboration between APJII-IDNIC and APNIC to meet the needs of the Indonesian Internet community. Participants left with a deeper knowledge of the IPv6 protocol, how to deploy it, and better equipped to share what they had learned.
Participate in a future train-the-trainer session
Affan’s advice to people participating in APNIC Academy train-the-trainer sessions is to come with an open mind and expect to be more confident sharing what you’ve learned within your own professional community.
The next opportunity to participate in a train-the-trainer session will be during the APNIC Academy workshops at APNIC 60 from 4 to 11 September 2025 in Da Nang, Viet Nam, this time as part of the Advanced Routing workshop. Register today!
