In APNIC’s biennial survey, network security consistently ranks as one of the biggest strategic and operational challenges faced by Members. Responding to this, APNIC has included in its 2024 Activity Plan the goal to ‘Evolve the approach to cybersecurity advice and technical assistance support’ as one of its most important goals.
In 2019, APNIC launched DASH, initially featuring the ability for Members to track and receive notifications about traffic originating from their networks that hits a network of honeypots from the Honeynet Project. This feature, known as ‘Suspicious Traffic’, highlighted DASH’s commitment to network security from the outset.
In 2022, DASH introduced its second feature, ‘Routing Status‘, which allows Members to monitor inconsistencies among BGP, RPKI, and IRR for their Internet number resources. It also enables the creation of alerts for potential BGP hijacks and other routing issues.
Now, APNIC is launching a new feature to further assist its Members in securing their networks. Through a collaboration with Mutually Agreed Norms for Routing Security (MANRS), APNIC Members can now access their networks’ MANRS readiness directly within DASH.
What is MANRS readiness?
MANRS is a global initiative, supported by the Global Cyber Alliance, that offers vital solutions to mitigate common routing threats. MANRS provides specific actions across four programs: Network Operators, Internet Exchange Points, CDN and Cloud Providers, and Equipment Vendors.
MANRS readiness reflects how well these MANRS actions are implemented, calculated using a set of metrics for each action from various data sources. A detailed explanation of the metrics calculation is available on the MANRS Measurement Framework page.
MANRS readiness in DASH
APNIC Members can now view a summary of their networks’ MANRS readiness scores in DASH (Figure 1).
The overview page features a matrix displaying the readiness category scores for each Autonomous System Number (ASN) held by the Member. It also shows the average scores for their networks per category.
By navigating to the new MANRS readiness page, Members can access a more detailed view of the readiness scores for their ASNs. This includes the ability to see monthly trends per category and individual metric scores.
With the integration of MANRS into DASH, we aim to encourage APNIC Members to join MANRS by participating in one of their programs. Participants receive support in implementing relevant actions that help protect the Internet from route hijacks, route leaks, IP address spoofing, and other threats.
In response to community requests for assistance with addressing Internet security challenges, APNIC is exploring additional security-related features for DASH. Stay tuned!
