APNIC’s Elly Tawhai attended the 19th Pacific Islands Telecommunications Association Annual General Meeting and Tradeshow (PITA 19) in Nukualofa, Tonga from 20 to 24 April 2015.

With the theme “Developing Smart Islands”, the aim of PITA 19 was for the development of smart approaches in telecommunications to suit the unique needs of the Pacific Islands and help move the smaller islands into the digital economy. Attendees from all over the Pacific attended, including representatives from the Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Tokelau and Tuvalu.

Panellists and invited keynote presenters spoke on topics such as smart connections, positioning of satellites for rural and remote services, submarine cable communications and cloud models for the Pacific Islands.  There was also a presentation about the effects of Cyclone  Pam on Internet and telecommunications infrastructure in Vanuatu and the lessons learned from them.

APNIC activities:

  • Elly presented the APNIC update on APNIC’s services and new initiatives at the Regional Telecommunication session on 20 April. The presentation was well received, with many questions relating to IPv4 address transfers.

  • Elly also took the opportunity to meet with Members to discuss their Internet addressing needs and membership enquiries.
