New networks, both digital and personal, were made during the APRICOT 2016 Workshops held last week at Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand.

Sixty-four people participated in the five workshops run across five-days, including 20 fellows. Participants travelled from Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, India, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Myanmar, Nepal, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Tokelau, Tonga, Vanuatu, and from around host country New Zealand.

Philip Smith, Senior Network Engineer for the Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC), was delighted with the level of participation by attendees, particularly the questions that attendees asked and their engagement in the lab exercises during the workshop. This sentiment was shared by the other trainers.

“These workshops work best when attendees participate actively in what we teach, and work together to solve the tasks given to them during the lab work. There are always different ways to solve problems and we certainly had plenty of creativity within our workshop class for the lab scenarios we ran,” Philip says.

“I think it’s testament to the trainers and the way we run our workshops to encourage attendees to add to discussion as well as to think broadly and work together on exercises.”

The hands-on exercises and experiences provided by the trainers were a highlight for many participants who were keen to return home and share what they had learned with their colleagues, or implement their learning on their own network infrastructure.

The five workshops offered were:

  • Advanced BGP with Philip Smith (NSRC) and Nurul Islam (APNIC)
  • Network Management and Monitoring with Hervey Allen (NSRC) and Mike Jager (NSRC)
  • Security with Randy Bush (IIJ), Yoshinobu Matsuzaki (IIJ), Daniel Griggs (NZRS) and Alisha Gurung (TashiCell)
  • Virtualisation with Dean Pemberton (NRSC) and Hans Kuhn (NSRC)
  • Wireless with Jonathan Brewer (NSRC) and Fakrul Alam (APNIC)
